5-POINT SCALES

Gifted students tend to possess exceptional abilities to respond to stimuli.  They can also possess overexcitibilites in the following areas: intellectual, emotional, imaginational, sensual, and psychomotor (Perrone-McGovern, et al., 2015). Overexcitibility is the enhanced way an individual sees the world around them.  They tend to process larger amounts of stimuli from their environment. Their emotions can be extreme and intense.  A 5-point scale can help a gifted child understand and visualize their emotions.  It provides a student with specific strategies to regulate their intensifying emotions.

"Cognitive learning strategies (e.g., organizational strategies, rehearsal strategies, elaboration strateiges) as well as metacognitive learning strategies (e.g., goal setting, strategy monitoring, strategy adjustment) are integral parts of SRL (Stoeger et al, 2015, p. 258). Gifted students who are able to self-regulate are found to experience more positve emotions than those who are unable to. Students who can self-regulate are more academically successful when they learn to regulate emotions at a younger age (Stoeger et al, 2015).

This Elements self-regulating emotion tool can help students use the elements to regulate their feelings. Using the earth, students will squeeze their bodies and release the tensions kept; fire allows students to have postive thoughts to ignite happier thoughts; the element of water triggers saliva in their mouth, which helps students to calm their emotions; finally, air reminds students to take deep breaths while looking up to better regulate their breathing.
